Art: Human or AI?
Why do we tend to prefer human-made videos and music over AI-generated ones? As artificial intelligence becomes more capable of creating visually stunning videos and catchy tunes, it’s tempting to think it could soon rival human creativity. After all, AI can easily replicate the patterns of popular beats, storylines, and characters to appeal to different personality types. However, despite these advancements, there’s something about the human touch that keeps us coming back to traditional art forms. It’s not just about how well something is crafted, but about the emotional connection and intent behind it.
One of the main reasons people prefer human-created art is the depth of emotion it conveys. When a musician pours their heart into a song, we can feel the vulnerability, the joy, or the sorrow that shaped that track. These emotions resonate with us because they reflect the complexities of being human. While AI can create songs that follow familiar emotional arcs, it can’t truly understand or express the depth of these feelings. AI-generated art may check all the boxes for what makes a catchy song or engaging video, but it often lacks the soul that makes human creations so moving and meaningful.
Then, there’s the beauty of imperfection. Humans are imperfect, and this comes through in art, whether it’s a slightly off-key note in a live performance or a spontaneous moment in a video. These imperfections add a layer of authenticity and make the content feel more relatable. AI, with its ability to polish everything to perfection, can create content that feels too clean, even sterile. While it can replicate patterns that appeal to different audiences, the work might lack the organic, raw quality that makes human art feel real.
We think that human-made art carries a sense of intent and purpose. Every lyric, every frame in a video, often reflects a personal journey or a story the creator wants to share with the world. This human narrative gives us a way to connect not just with the art, but with the person behind it. AI, on the other hand, may generate highly appealing content, but it lacks that personal backstory and depth of intention. Without a genuine human connection, even the most technically impressive AI creation can feel hollow—a reflection of patterns rather than a story born from experience. In the end, it’s this shared human experience that keeps us reaching for human-made videos and music.
AI in Game-Making: A Beginner's Guide: What Everyone Needs To Know!
This month in TheCGInsider Newsletter- September 2024: We’ve discussed over the last few months how artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming every facet of our lives. This month we discuss how AI is beginning to shape the future of game-making, from creating lifelike NPCs to enabling real-time, dynamic storytelling. For gamers and developers alike, AI is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and its impact on the industry will only grow in the years to come. The future of gaming is here—and AI is leading the way.
AI in Game-Making: A Beginner’s Guide
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shaking up industries everywhere, and the gaming world is no exception. From crafting immersive game worlds to streamlining development processes, AI is changing how games are created, played, and experienced. If you’re new to this topic, there’s a lot to get excited about! AI offers a whole range of possibilities to enhance creativity, boost storytelling, and improve player engagement.
-Bringing NPCs to Life with AI
A great place to start is with non-playable characters (NPCs). Typically, NPCs in games follow basic, scripted behaviors and even more basic dialog systems that have really limited how realistic NPC interactions often feel.
AI is quickly changing that. With technologies like machine learning, NPCs are becoming more adaptive, able to learn and respond dynamically to players. This means NPCs can now have unique personalities, emotions, and even backstories that evolve based on how you interact with them. Gone are the days of static characters—AI is making every NPC feel like a real part of the game world.
Improving Game Development
AI isn’t just about making NPCs smarter—it’s transforming the entire game development process. One of the biggest time-consumers for developers is creating assets (like environments, props, and objects) that make up the game’s world. Imagine designing every tree, every street, or even every blade of grass by hand. It’s a lot!
AI speeds up this process by automating asset creation. Designers can now generate large, detailed environments with just a few inputs. This frees them up to focus on the more creative aspects, like designing the overall atmosphere of the game. For example, AI can procedurally generate a street, leaving developers to fine-tune the details, ensuring everything looks just right.
-Dynamic Storytelling with AI
One of the coolest things AI brings to gaming is the ability to offer truly dynamic storytelling. In most games, the storyline is pretty much set. You might have some control over your character’s path, but the final outcome is usually the same for everyone.
With AI, this is changing. Imagine a game where every decision you make alters the storyline, introduces new characters, or even reshapes the game world. You could start out as a soldier on a mission and end up running a farm, all depending on the choices you make. AI allows for these branching storylines to be generated in real-time, so no two players will have the same experience. It’s like having an infinite number of possible game outcomes.
Personalized Gameplay For All
AI also enables games to be tailored to individual player preferences, known as Player Experience Modeling (PEM). By analyzing your gameplay style—whether you love exploring every nook and cranny or prefer fast-paced action—AI can adjust the game’s difficulty and content to suit you. If you spend a lot of time inspecting objects in a room, for example, AI might throw in more hidden details for you to discover.
This personal touch makes the game feel more engaging and ensures that each player has a unique experience. AI can even adapt the game’s challenges in real-time, ensuring that the difficulty level matches your skills, keeping things fun without being too easy or frustrating.
-AI-Powered Testing and Development Efficiency
Another area where AI shines is in game testing. Before a game hits the shelves, developers have to go through rigorous playtesting to catch bugs, glitches, and balance issues. Traditionally, this involves teams of testers playing the game repeatedly—a time-consuming and labor-intensive process.
With AI-driven automated playtesting, developers can now simulate thousands of potential gameplay scenarios in a fraction of the time. This not only speeds up the development process but also results in a more polished and bug-free game. AI also helps developers analyze player feedback and market trends, providing insights into what players enjoy and what areas need improvement.
The Future Of AI in Game-Making
Looking ahead, the future of AI in gaming is full of exciting possibilities. Imagine a game that’s generated in real-time based on your input. You could describe a scenario—say, a mystery set in a cyberpunk city—and AI would create a fully playable game with unique characters, plotlines, and settings tailored to your preferences.
As AI continues to evolve, it will likely become even more integrated into augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) games. This would allow players to interact with lifelike characters and environments in ways that feel incredibly real, creating fully immersive gaming experiences.
-Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Of course, with any powerful technology, there are challenges. One concern is how AI might impact jobs in the gaming industry, especially for artists and designers. Since AI can automate tasks like asset creation and animation, some worry that it could replace human workers in these roles. While AI certainly speeds up the development process, human creativity is still needed to add depth and emotional complexity to games.
There’s also the issue of data privacy. Many AI-driven customizations rely on gathering player data, so developers need to be transparent about how they collect and use this information. Strong security measures will be crucial to protect players’ data and maintain trust. Isn’t that the truth about everything?
